Hi, my name is Nikki Eklektos, and I am an HPCSA registered specialist Psychiatrist.

My interest in Psychiatry developed as a BSc student while studying neuroanatomy when I came to appreciate the amazing complexities of the human mind. I decided to apply to medical school with the aim of ultimately specialising in Psychiatry. After graduating from Wits Medical School in 2008, I moved to Pietermaritzburg to complete my two years of internship. During this time, I experienced a brief but exciting time working in Psychiatry, which solidified my resolve to further specialise in the treatment of mental health conditions. After my internship, I completed my community service at Kimberley Hospital, where I was fortunate to gain further experience working at a specialised psychiatric hospital. Thereafter, I applied to the registrar training program at Wits to further my studies in Psychiatry.

After completing my specialist training in 2017, I was employed as a consultant Psychiatrist at Sterkfontein Hospital in the Forensic Neuroscience Unit. In 2021, I was employed at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital as a consultant Psychiatrist working with adult mental health care users. During my time as a Psychiatrist, I have been responsible for running inpatient wards, seeing outpatients, and attending to emergencies in the casualty department. I have also been involved in the teaching and training of medical students and psychiatric registrars.

Throughout my time working in mental health care services, I have come to truly value a team-centred, multidisciplinary, and integrative approach to optimising mental health. My aim is to provide all patients with a comprehensive and patient-centred approach to their treatment.

I have experience in treating a wide range of psychiatric conditions and have a special interest in treating anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
