Hi, my name is Val-Lyn McQuade, Educational Psychologist and I’m currently counselling at PsychMatters Family Centre, in Bedfordview.
I completed my B. Psychology (Cum laude), Honours degree in psychology and Masters of Education degree (in Educational Psychology) (Cam Laude) at the University of the Witwatersrand.
My passion from a very young age has been to help those in need through volunteer work.
I completed my internship at Epworth’s children’s village and worked with children and teens who had been abandoned, neglected, or sexually abused, ultimately resulting in their removal and placement into a children’s home.
A true sense of advocacy and compassion for children, teens and families was acquired during this year, as well as the need to promote and educate parents, and educators on the need for positive early childhood development, attachment and bonding.
I consulted at Epworth Children’s Village for another year. From the vast and dynamic experience gained working within a multidisciplinary team (social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists and remedial therapists)
I established my private practice at Bishop Bavin School in 2012.
The Bishop Bavin Care Centre was then established as the need for further allied therapeutic professionals arose. During that time at Bishop Bavin School my passion for assisting children and adolescents to reach their full potential continued.
The Care centre evolved into The Enrichment Centre where a child’s learning and emotional needs could be assessed and a learning and emotional support program developed accordingly.
I have been trained in Psychodynamic child psychotherapy (play therapy), individual psychotherapy and parental support.
My passion is working with children, pre-teens, adolescents, young adults and parents in order to reach their full potential. I have also conducted workshops on potty training, parental involvement in homework, and social media and sex education.
